Keyway 04 / The machines themselves

Every machine on its own peg, and none of them missing.

You cannot protect, patch or account for a device nobody has written down. This keyway is the board itself: what you own, what state it is in, what it is allowed to reach, and what happens on the handsets that walk between rooms all day.

An inventory is the first honest document you will have

Ask any practice for its computer count and what comes back is normally a guess running about a quarter short. There is the machine in the sterilisation room, the laptop the practice manager keeps at home, the spare pulled out of a cupboard the week another one died. Each of them reaches something, and an analysis resting on a guess rests on nothing.

Monitoring produces the list, keeps it current, and adds what state each device is in. Patch level, disk health, encryption status, installed software. That output is useful far beyond security: it answers hardware refresh questions, insurance questions and auditor questions with something factual.

A risk analysis built on a guess at the device count is a risk analysis built on sand.

Three platforms because three problems

Windows and Linux estates are handled through N-able N-sight, which also carries the web filtering line and mobile device management. Apple hardware gets Addigy, because managing a Mac as though it were a Windows machine produces drift you find out about eighteen months later. Phones get Zimperium, which decides on the handset rather than inferring from traffic somewhere else.

Filtering deserves a note of its own. It runs on the device, so a laptop taken home or used at a second site is held to the same categories it would be at the front desk. That is the whole reason it is not simply a setting on your office router.

Cut cards

Four cut cards, with live rates.

Every figure comes live from billing. Add whichever ones fit and correct the counts on the keyring afterwards.

Remote Monitoring and Management

N-able N-sight across Windows, macOS and Linux

The board on which each machine hangs from its own peg. Patch state, hardware inventory, disk health and installed software right across the estate, whether a box runs Windows, macOS or Linux, plus enrollment and control over whichever tablets and handsets the practice owns.

  • An inventory you can hand to a risk analysis instead of guessing at a device count.
  • Patch cycles arranged around clinic hours instead of straight across the working day.
  • Health signals that catch a failing drive before it takes a morning down with it.

Web and DNS Filtering

N-able N-sight web protection on the device

Filtering carried by the machine itself, not parked on the office router. A laptop working from a kitchen table, a second site, or a hotel network answers to the same categories it answers to at reception.

  • Category rules that follow the device wherever somebody carries it.
  • Browser activity stays visible, private windows included, which counts on any machine several people use.
  • Bandwidth reporting, useful when a site suddenly slows down and nobody knows why.

Apple Fleet Management

Addigy for the macOS and iOS estate

Apple hardware is common in dental and specialist practice and it does not respond well to being managed as though it were Windows. This line holds configuration, encryption settings and update state in place on Macs, iPads and iPhones through tooling built for the platform.

  • Configuration profiles that stay applied instead of drifting quietly over a year.
  • Disk encryption state visible and reportable, which questionnaires tend to ask about.
  • Update enforcement that does not require somebody to walk around the building.

Mobile Threat Defense

Zimperium, judging on the handset itself

Phones travel from room to room, between sites, and out into the car park. Detection here lives on the handset, which means a hostile application, a tampered device, or a bad link opened inside a messaging app gets caught there and then rather than deduced later from evidence somewhere else.

  • Detection runs on the phone and does not depend on the traffic passing through you.
  • Application risk, device integrity and link handling all covered on Android and iOS.
  • Sits alongside management rather than replacing it; the two answer different questions.

Honest scope

What this cut does not open

Managing a fleet is mostly a matter of knowing where its edges are. Here are the edges of this one.

  • Manufacturer-locked clinical equipment is outside the count. Imaging consoles, analysers, sensor workstations in a dental surgery and their relatives will normally refuse a management agent, and forcing one on can finish your support arrangement. Leave them off the order entirely. We pick them out while fitting and describe the segmentation and access work that suits them.
  • Staff owned hardware raises a policy question ahead of a product one. Enrolling a device somebody owns has consequences for that person, and those need deciding and writing down by you before anything is installed. We will implement what you decide. We will not decide it for you.
  • Patching cannot fix what the vendor has not fixed. Where a clinical application holds you on an ageing operating system or a database engine nobody supports any more, no patching schedule fixes that. Such cases want compensating controls plus a frank exchange with the software vendor. We will name them out loud instead of allowing a green dashboard to suggest otherwise.
  • Filtering is a category control, not a guarantee. Category lists are maintained by a vendor and no list is complete. It cuts exposure and gives you visibility. It does not make a browser safe.
  • Mobile threat defense does not manage the phone. Detection on a handset and management of a handset answer different questions. Where you need configuration, enrollment and remote wipe, that is management, and it needs to be on the order too.
